Silchester Pompeian-style Mill Fragment SF 55713D Model
Pompeian-style mill from the University of Reading excavations at Silchester. Small Find Number 5571. This is one of three fragments (SF 5571, SF 5614 and SF 5615). This fragment and SF 5614 appear to be from the upper stone. Both have a curved grinding surface with internal diameters of 200 and 240 mm. The third fragment (SF 5615) is much more abraded than the other two fragments and its attribution as part of a lower stone is less certain. There is a small area of concave wear which Allen (2012, 262) suggests is secondary use. Pompeian-style mills are not common in Roman Britain. The stone was chemically analysed by Allen (2012) and found to be a Late Quaternary tephrite from Mayen, Germany.
Weight 1583 g.
Thickness 99 mm.
Zone 6: Post-hole 9089 (9084).
Further fragments (SF 5614, SF 5615) from Period 2 Post-hole 9980. Weights 1790 g and 2083 g. Thickness 84 and 87 mm.
