More model informationThis slate, carved on both sides with outlines of heraldic animals (probably lions), was excavated at Finlaggan on Islay. In the Middle Ages the islands of Eilean Mor and Eilean na Comhairle on Loch Finlaggan were the ceremonial base of the Lords of the Isles and their Council. The slate may have been a test piece by a medieval craftsman.
