SMS Saschen was an Ironclad warship build for the Imperial German navy during the 1870’s as part of a modernisation plan, to modernise and strengthen Germanys navy. In total 4 would be built with her sister ships being Bayern, Württemberg and Baden, and would fullfil the role of coastal defence ships given their classification of “Ausfallkorvette” ( “sortie corvette”). Their service would continue through the 1800’s until 1896 where they were given an extensive modernisation as they were outdated by this point, which replaced everyting from the engines, to the guns and armour. In September 1901, Sachsen collided with the aviso Wacht while on extensive training maneuvers with the rest of the fleet, sinking Wacht. The crew were safely evacuated and neither ship suffered casualties, however this would end Saschens career as she would be placed into reserve in 1902 and stricken in 1910.
