A clay pipe bowl modelled in the shape of a soldier’s head featuring a moustache and wearing a shako style helmet with chin-strap. The helmet depicts an eight pointed star surrounded by a wreath: a common British design from the 1860s responding to the popularity of the Rifle Brigade.
This pipe bowl was excavated from the site of the Moses Thomas flourmill attendant cottage in Mernda, Victoria (Victorian Heritage Inventory site H7922-0040). The mill and cottage represent a significant site in the history of Victoria’s European colonization and agricultural settlement. The cottage and mill were constructed in 1855 on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri of the Kulin nation.
This photogrammetry model was created by Thomas J. Keep from 442 colour-checked images of the original, using Agisoft Metashape. Manual alignment and slight texture editing was undertaken within Blender.
