More model informationSorrowful Christ 19th c. Unknown Folk Sculptor
The sculptor depicted the canonical figure of the Sorrowful Christ. The iconography of the image is based primarily on people’s notions of Jesus’ suffering before his crucifixion. Christ, crowned with a wreath of thorns, sits, supporting his head with his right hand. The frontal composition, and soft sculpting of the face with well-preserved polychromy that enhances the image, reveal the hand of a skilled artist with experience in three-dimensional sculpture. In a naive manner, the author conveys the tortured body, pain, despair, and sadness that are frozen on the face of Jesus. The sculpture is carved from wood and painted with oil paints. https://collection-lvivgallery.org.ua/en
