South Court
Section 10/20: The South Court of the Western High Gate of Medinet Habu.
The South Court represents a major architectural difference between the Eastern and Western High Gates of Medinet Habu. Whereas the Eastern High Gate maintains a single east-to-west route through its passageway, the addition of this unroofed court to the Western High Gate added a north-to-south detour from the main axis. The original function of this court is uncertain, but – whatever it was - it seems to have changed during the life of the gate. During the 21st Dynasty the South Court was blocked off from the main passage by means of a mud-brick wall (visible here and in Section 1) and converted into a closed room with a roof supported by pillars.
