South Tower Interior

Section 4/20: The South Tower Interior of the Western High Gate of Medinet Habu.

The space featured in this section of the model was originally composed of solid rock, and formed the interior of the massive south tower which, together with its sister tower on the north side of the passage, formed the outer entrance of the Western High Gate. After the gate fell into disuse, most of its sandstone blocks were removed for use in other constructions – which explains their absence in this section. The mud-brick ‘walls’ visible here are in fact a notch that was formed in the massive enclosure wall that surrounded the temple precinct; the towers of both the high gates of Medinet Habu were keyed into this enclosure wall.
