Southern elephant seal skull - ML_2011_00023D Model
Southern elephant seal skull (Mirounga leonina); belonging to a 8 year old male called EDO, killed by orcas at Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands. During the necropsy of the dead seal we removed the head. The skull was cleaned up, photos were taken, and the 3D model was generated using Agisoft Metashape. Meshes of the skull and mandibles were manipulated in MeshLab to produce the full skull. We collect pinniped skulls to study the evolution of skull morphology. We are particularly interested in the skull dimorphism between male and female elephant seals, that is likely due to the fact that the males need to fight to breed. Model version = ML_2011_0002_join_F1; skull preparation: Filippo Galimberti; photos and 3D model: Simona Sanvito; mesh clean up: FG For further information about our research on marine mammals in the Falklands see www.eleseal.org.
