The Master thesis of Marcel Karnapke is the prototype of the so called “Spatial Information Lab”. A sandbox for studies in the third dimension where data acquisition, processing and visualization technologies are used to invent, test or illustrate various theories and ideas. The first subject of the lab is the 5000 year old archaeological rock-art of the Valcamonica Valley situated in the northern Alps of Italy. In the lab visitors go beyond being informed spectators in a museum. Participants are encouraged to make full use of their bodies and senses by touching the rock-art, being transformed into ancient rock-figures and listening to sonified 3D scan data. The primary goal is to invite everyone to participate in the scientific dialogue by becoming part of the archaeological research process themselves. This is archived by generating interfaces between science, technology and media art.
