This instrument was used by Walter Noel Hartley to analyse the spectra of the chemical elements. Just like the light being split from the sun by drops of rain to create rainbow, thanks to objects like this Spectrometer it was possible to reproduce the effect of light passing through a prism.
Spectrometers are still used in physical chemistry and physics. This short YouTube video explains how to use a modern day spectrometer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfvy4qJQs9Q
