Spencer is a sleek, silver streamlined engine in Thomas & Friends. He is modeled after the real-life LNER Class A4 locomotives, known for their speed and power. Spencer is often portrayed as arrogant and boastful, primarily because of his role as the private engine for the Duke and Duchess of Boxford. His superior attitude, particularly towards slower and smaller engines like Thomas, often lands him in situations where he has to learn humility.

Spencer is known for competing with Gordon and Thomas in races, usually underestimating them and overestimating his own abilities. Despite his arrogance, he is reliable when it comes to performing his duties for the Duke and Duchess. Spencer also appears in both model and CGI eras of the show, maintaining his character throughout.
