The construction of the castle seems to date back to the medieval period, datable between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, while the tower could be a much more modern reconstruction of a previous tower erected in the Middle Ages. The different construction phases are mostly due to the frequent battles culminating for the most part in the destruction or sieges of the castle. The Spinola family chose the castle as accommodation just to put more control/defense of the surrounding valley (Valle Stura). In the eighteenth century the castle was abandoned by the Spinola family, leaving it completely abandoned for years. In the 90s the castle was the subject of an important restoration work.
