The Spix’s Macaw is a bird in the Psittaciformes order, in the Psittacidae family.
The Spix’s Macaw was discovered and collected in April 1819 by Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix (in Juazeiro, Bahia), and subsequently described by Johann Wagler in 1832. The exact area of occurrence of the species, however, remained undefined and only could be determined after the eventual rediscovery of the species in 1986 by Paul Roth, who found the last three birds in the Barra Grande-Melancia streams, in the municipality of Curaçá, in northeastern Bahia. In 1990, an expedition led by Carlos Yamashita and Tony Juniper found a single bird (a male) remaining in the wild.
