This prototype weapon, resembling a modified Thompson, was developed by Springfield in December 1943. It has an extended body, expanded buffer spring space, and uses an M1918 Browning magazine to fire .30-06 rounds with a blowback system. Heavier than an SMG, it never went beyond the prototype stage. Named the “Johnson” to match the “Thompson,” it was found in an abandoned Illinois warehouse and spread by traders to places like the Capital Wasteland, the Commonwealth, and the Mojave.
