Dr Iskandar often recounts his gruelling training of throwing “50 pots a day, 300 pots a week” in Tajimi, Japan on his Colombo Plan Scholarship in 1972.
The relentless, rigorous training instilled in Dr Iskandar not only discipline and endurance but also sound technique and skill. With this foundation established, he began to experiment with more unorthodox forms and interpretations of a ‘pot’.
Square Holder has a unique feature so subtle one may miss it altogether. Its globular body does not have a round mouth. Instead, a square mouth emerges from its round body seamlessly, without any awkwardness or clumsiness. Dr Iskandar applied his sakura seals on both sides of each lug-handle. The seals act as decorative elements as well as a strengthening method for the weaker joint areas of the lug-handles. As with many of his vessels, he has selected as its handle, a unique branch picked up on one of his many walks.
