This squid-shaped clay figure was excavated at the Washinoki 4 Site, in Morimachi Town, Hokkaido. The figure has been dated to the first half of the Late Jomon period (approx. 4000 years ago). It measures 11.5cm in height and is 4.8cm wide. The figure resembles other “bell-shaped” figures (鐸(たく)形土製品) found during this time. The distinctive triangular portion on the top of this particular figure, making it resemble a squid, is what sets it apart from these other figure types. The model is currently displayed at the Mori Town Office for Archaeological Excavation and Research.
