Back Comb from the S.R. Stewart & Co, Aberdeen Combworks, 1825-1997. Aberdeen has a long tradition with this lesser known industry. Creating hand-sawn combs from horn and tortoiseshell to name but a few.
In 1899 several companies combined to establish The Aberdeen Comb Works Company Ltd with S.R Stewart & Co in control. The production of combs eventually ceased sometime in the 1990s.
Due to the success of the Combworks many wanted to know their secrets with one particular chemist being fined in the process. In 1925 William Barry was charged and had the option to either pay £25 or spend three months in prison.
