SRP12374 Right Femur 3D Model
The individual SRP98 12374 is a male with an age category of 36 – 45 years old, from the Spitalfields excavation in London, Period 17, dating 1400 – 1539. From analysis of the skeletal elements present, he had bone lesions & a distribution pattern indicative of having venereal syphilis, a Treponemal disease. Much has been debated about the disease & when it first came to Europe. The site from which this male was found has provided key information for the debate, Evidence of skeletal treponematosis from the medieval cemetery of St Mary Spital, 2015, Walker et al. AJPA, Volume 156, Issue 1, pages 90–101. The skeletal remains of this male were found during excavations of Spitalfields market (1991 - 2007) which revealed the remains of over 10,500 individuals excavated in 1999 -2002, from the medieval period on the site of St Mary Spital.Over 5,000 individuals were analysed & a comprehensive publication was produced providing detailed information by Museum of London Archaeology, Monograph 60.
