The individual SRP98 9488 is a male with an age category of 26 - 35 years old, from Period 17, dating 1400AD - 1539AD. From macroscopic analysis revealed that he not only had the rather spectacular healed sharp force trauma to his cranium exposing the cranial cavity but also suffered trauma in his lower back, with an avulsion injury in his lumbar vertebrae (L4 & L5) and thoracic vertebra (T12) and foot bone. His lower leg bones (tibiae) had pathological changes indicating periostitis from a non- specific infection. The skeletal remains of this male were found during excavations of Spitalfields market (1991 - 2007) which revealed the remains of over 10,500 individuals excavated in 1999 -2002, from the medieval period on the site of St Mary Spital. It was an Augustinian priory & hospital founded in the 12th century, with the hospital becoming one of the largest in Europe. Over 5,000 individuals were analysed & a comprehensive publication was produced by Museum of London Archaeology, Monograph 60.
