The Iroquois was built at Port Moody in 1900 for the Victoria and Sidney Railway. The vessel was 82 feet long, had a 21-foot beam and an 8-foot depth of hold.
On 10 April 1911 the Iroquois left Sidney for Nanaimo carrying 32 passengers and crew with a cargo of general freight. Soon after the departure, a gust of wind struck the ship and she developed a list. She foundered in minutes with twenty-one loss of life.
The wreck site was located east of Sydney in 33 m / 110’ of water, on November 11, 1977, by members of the Underwater Archeology Society of British Columbia (UASBC) and of the RimPac Divers Club of Sidney.
