More model information

The SS Joseph S. Fay is located off of 40 Mile Point, MI. Photographs for this model were taken by Indiana University Center for Underwater Science field school students in July 2019. Model produced in Agisoft Metashape with 3908 photos.

The SS Joseph S. Fay was a wooden steam freighter built in 1871 in Cleveland, Ohio. Built specifically for the job, the Fay was one of the first freighters to haul iron ore across the Great Lakes. It was towing the schooner-barge D. P. Rhodeson October 19, 1905 heading from Escanaba, Michigan to Ashtabula, Ohio laden with iron ore when gale-force winds and rough waters around 40 Mile Point wrenched the Rhodes free of the Fay. The Fay quickly filled with water eventually grounding on the sandbar. A portion of the wrecked hull is visible on the beach today, while the rest remains underwater a short distance off-shore.
