SS Surprise 1885, Salary Bay, Madagascar3D ModelNoAI
This model was created in collaboration with the Marovany Association, Madagascar, as part of the Rising from the Depths project.
SS Surprise was an American-built barque of 473 tonnes that wrecked in Salary Bay in 1885 in remarkably similar circumstances to the other century-spanning wrecks recorded during this project: fine weather, the master sleeping, the vessel being much further east than expected and striking the reef off Salary Bay just before dawn.
Surprise was built in 1866 at East Boston and was carrying 16,500 cases of refined petroleum to Bangladesh via Zanzibar. It sank several days after the wrecking having being salvaged and burned to the waterline. The wreck was discovered in 2007 by Fred Lucas, local diver and historian who supported this project and survey.
