This 3D model shows the wreck of the SS Wollongbar II - located offshore from Crescent Head, NSW, Australia in about 100m water depth. This digital 3D model was developed by Daniel Adams from the Curtin University HIVE from underwater video footage collected from an ROV by Heritage NSW in 2019.
SS Wollongbar II was a 2,239-ton passenger steamship built in 1922. In 1943 a Japanese submarine, the I-180, destroyed the Wollongbar with two torpedos killing 32 people on board. The ship sank in minutes with only five crew surviving the attack. The SS Wollongbar II was one of many vessels lost to enemy assault along the eastern Australian coastline during WWII.
