More model informationThe 135 ft wooden screw steamer St Albans was built in 1868 and carried passengers and freight throughout most of the Lower Lakes. In January of 1881 after departing Milwaukee heading for Ludington with cargo of flour and livestock and six passengers, she began taking on water likely holed by the ice. All crew and passengers survived, but the ship sank in 165 ft of water about 15 miles northeast of Milwaukee. The model was created from 4,167 1920 x 1080 images shot by Evan Kovac of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the Wisconsin Historical Society for a 2008 photomosaic project.
