Here is another old design. - The best lore says that the early Federation was not sure whether they should Use Nacelles or Rings to motivate warp drive. You can either roatate protons and antiprotons in tiny little coils or in huge rings to warp space and get FTL. The coils can be tuned and adjusted allowing for manuevers at warp speeds. The coils can only do straight lines, but they are much more efficient.

The Vulcans, enjoying their lengthy pre-planning mission phases and efficiency opted for rings. Humans, who want to poke their noeses into things on a whim, went for maneuverability.

But, what if they had followed the Vulcan designs? This imagines a TOS era ship in that style.
