This small statue of a woman was found on the seabed near the site of SS Shirala, which sank in 1918, and is assumed to be associated with the wreck.
The statue is now in Littlehampton Museum, where it had previously been thought to be a statue of a monkey - the woman’s bonnet does, at first glance, give her a monkey-like appearance. The statue was photographed during an artefact recording session for the Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War project in July 2015.
