東京美術学校の第五代校長。明治34年から昭和7年まで東京美術学校長をつとめる。明治39年文部省美術展覧会(文展)創設を建議,40年の開催につくした。昭和6年帝国美術院長。茶人としても知られる。昭和15年3月2日死去。79歳。大坂出身。帝国大学卒。
