In 1811 a steam powered grinding mill was added to the site of the windmill at Upminster. The engine was a modified Boulton and Watt bellcrank engine, thought to have first been used in a Thames dredger barge. The engine was removed from the mill in 1940 and later scrapped. This reconstruction is based on photographic evidence and historical research. The only surviving model of an early Boulton and Watt bellcrank engine can be found in the London Science Museum.
