The steppe bison (Bison priscus) is an extinct species of bison that lived during the Ice Ages. It ranged from the British Isles, through Europe, across central and northern Asia, and into North America. 135 steppe bison fossils, including this complete right lower jaw, were excavated near Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire. At 200,000 years old, it dates to a warm ‘interglacial’ period. The bison at this time were huge at nearly 2 metres tall, fuelled by rich warm-climate vegetation.
