Stirling Head, Roman Emperor, Stirling Castle3D ModelNoAI
This is a scan of a Stirling Head, an oak roundel making up part of a series of carvings that decorated the ceiling of James V’s Presence Chamber in the 16th Century at Stirling Castle.
This Head shows a Roman Emperor ready for battle wearing a ‘paludamentum’, a military commander’s cloak. The beard and hair of the Head are characteristic of depictions of Marcus Aurelius.
Stirling heads are constructed of 3 panels, originally only secured by glue. The great majority of the Heads, however, are in part constructed in 2 ply, and additional board or block having been placed over the middle board to enable the carver to model the central portion of the medallion in high relief. Nail holes are apparent in the borders which indicate the way in which the Heads were fixed to the ceiling.
