More model informationDating from the early 17th century, this oval carving is of the god Mercury. He is wearing a winged hat and holding a caduceus (staff) in his hand.
It is one of eight panels with planetary deities that were originally set into the east wall of the walled garden at Edzell Castle, Angus.
Commissioned by David Lynsey, these carvings are likely to have been copied from engravings by the German artist Georg Pencz that were published in contemporary pattern books.
