Stone Panel, Sol, Edzell Castle

Dating from the early 17th Century, this is an oval carving depicting the god Sol. It is one of eight panels with planetary deities that were originally set into the east wall of the walled garden at Edzell Castle, Angus.

Commissioned by David Lynsey, these carvings are likely to have been copied from engravings by the German artist Georg Pencz that were published in contemporary pattern books.
