More model informationBronze age stone tool originating from the prehistoric copper mining district Wirtsalpe in Pinzgau/Salzburg (Austria). The artifact shows two different phases of usage: First it was used as a runner stone for grinding ore or the copper rich slag from the early stages of the smelting process. The transverse groove on top and the cicular groove in the lower part were used for mounting the tool, the flat lower side derives from the grinding process. In a second phase the stone tool was used as a so called “Pochplatte”, an anvil stone for breaking up the ore or the slag into smaller pieces, as shown by the deep moulds on both sides.
