More model informationThis stone was discovered beside the steps leading to the Northumbrian church at Whithorn.
The irregular sandstone boulder has a hollow in its upper surface; you can see the individual dimples indicating that the hollow was pecked – formed by striking the surface of the stone with a smaller hammerstone.
Though the base of the stone is irregular in shape, the stone was seemingly securely set into the ground to render it stable. Due to its location, the stone is interpreted as possibly having held water or oil to allow those entering the church to perform ritual ablutions on their approach.
