STROKE AWARENESS MONTH: CAUSES, SIGNS AND PREVENTION
Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Every year, nearly 800,000 people suffer from a stroke, and more than 130,000 die from them. 1 In Europe it is also a leading cause of death affecting more than 430 000 people annually.2
One in every six people in Europe will, according to published statistics, suffer from a stroke. It is the second most common cause of death after heart disease and the leading cause of long-term
disability. Each year around 150,000 people die from strokes in the EU – more than 400 people every day. More than one million survivors live with the consequences of their stroke, such as paralysis, communication difficulties, and problems with thinking, memory, or emotions.
