Stucco relief, Building B-1st, Group II, Holmul 3D Model
A pair of these early Late Formative stucco reliefs adorned the platform of Building B at the ancient Maya site of Holmul. It attests to the centrality of mountains and caves in the indigenous ritual landscape. Each relief depicts a mountain/earth spirit. Jade beads in the top section reference young maize growth and abundance. The skulls and bones in the lower section reflect the other part of the life cycle. An old grandfather god emerges from the mountain’s gaping mouth. He clings to a feathered serpent that embodies the wind and rain.
