Raw scan of the front of the independent nightclub that was once a thriving part of the music scene in Edinburgh.
This building opened as a music venue in 1995 and through the years has catered club nights to all non-mainstream musical tastes: techno, heavy metal, post-punk, new wave etc with much loved club nights the names of which can be seen in the artwork on the building.
Formerly, as Calton Studios, the venue hosted early shows by a host of icons in the early ’90s, with Nirvana, Ride, Slowdive, Smashing Pumpkins and Mudhoney all playing shows at the venue.
After gentrification of the once empty street with (non-soundproofed) residential flats built up around it, the club caved to long term pressure from developers and the new local residents and closed in 2017.
The building, and its artwork, has recently been entirely demolished (Aug/Sept 2020) and will be made into 22 residential flats and a ground floor office. None of the new flats will be affordable housing. Capture taken in July 2020
