More model information

This rock is one of several recorded as carved within the F3A Sturdy House Range of the MOD’s Feldom Ranges, near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

The stone was originally found by Paul Brown in 2000 and is now incorporated into defensive walling built by the Ministry of Defence within the firing range. Paul and Barbara Brown referenced the stone as ‘SR 3a’ in their 2008 publication, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, describing it as:

“Broken slab, five cups, 45 x 43 x 15 cm.”

Early OS maps (1850s) show a building called ‘Douthwaite Folly’ on the site, suggesting that stone from this former structure may have been reused in the MOD’s defensive walling.

At least one of the ‘cups’ is conical, with irregular fracturing around its edge, and may have been caused by a bullet rather than prehistoric activity. Old bullets can also be found on top of this structure.

The model was created from 37 images captured by Richard Stroud in July 2026.
