Sturdy House SR3b (Feldom)

One of the rocks recorded as carved within the F3A Sturdy House Range of the MOD’s Feldom Ranges, near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Originally found by Paul Brown in 2000, the stone sits on top of a defensive wall built by the MOD within the range. Paul and Barbara Brown ref the stone as ‘SR 3b’ in their 2008 publication, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, where they describe:

“Rectangular slab, one cup surface damaged 45 x 30 x 15cm.”

Early OS maps (1850s) show a building called ‘Douthwaite Folly’ in this area, suggesting the building was demolished and material was reused in MOD’s structure.

Although not apparent on site, this model shows the depression has a profile typical of a worn bullet impact, with a central pit surrounded by irregular fracturing. The stone’s original position is recorded on the side of the structure, suggesting it may have been moved. Old bullets can also be found a few metres away.

The model was created from 30 images captured by Richard Stroud in July 2026.
