Sturdy House SS1A (Feldom)

This cup-marked rock is located within the F3A Sturdy House Range of the MOD’s Feldom Ranges, near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

The stone was first recorded by Paul Brown in 2000 and sits approx 80 metres SW of two burnt mounds. Paul and Barbara Brown subsequently referenced the stone ‘SS1a’ in their 2008 publication, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, describing it as:

“Flat slab in farm enclosures 170 x 135 x 20cm. Close to springs, three cups.”

This model shows the most southern and largest cup has been countersunk within a carved circular depression. All three cup marks are well defined and display probable evidence of tooling. Several smaller depressions are also visible on the western part of the stone, although these appear to be of natural origin.

The model was created from 56 images captured by Richard Stroud in July 2026.
