Sun Temple, Konark (near Puri, Odisha)
The Sun Temple at Konark, about 35 km from Puri, is one of India’s most iconic monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the temple is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God.
Shaped like a colossal chariot with twelve intricately carved stone wheels and pulled by seven majestic horses, the temple symbolizes the Sun God’s journey across the sky. Its stunning architecture reflects the brilliance of Kalinga style temple design and engineering. Although the main sanctum is now in ruins, the remaining structure, including the Jagamohana (assembly hall) and Natya Mandapa (dance hall), still showcases exquisite carvings of deities, animals, dancers, and scenes from daily life.
Known as the Black Pagoda by ancient sailors due to its dark color and magnetic properties, the Konark Sun Temple remains a symbol of India’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
