More model informationThe 120 ft two masted schooner Syracuse was built in 1853 in Oswego, NY and was in service for 10 years. It was hauling coal in November of 1863 when it sprang a leak and started taking on water between Cheboygan and Hammond Bay, Lake Huron. The crew safely escaped in its skiff and rowed to Cheboygan, but the ship sank off Nine Mile point in 50 ft of water. Today it can be easily dived, but unfortunately is not buoyed by either the Straits Preserve or the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary. The model was created from 2,488 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman in the 2024 season.
