This special wooden table for storing paints was presented to Jan Matejko by his personal secretary Marian Gorzkowski. The table’s countertop, which is made of a flap that can be opened upwards to reveal an internal drawer divided into 70 small compartments. This enabled the artist being at work to arrange containers with almost the entire palette of colours needed during painting.
