More model informationGorgets are flat objects which could be strung and worn over the chest. In the southeast, these objects were generally made of stone or shell, some examples being extremely complex in design and craftsmanship and used as a form of body ornamentation.
Another type of gorget is thought to have been strung around the throat and served a more serious role in protecting its wearer, which may have been the task of this particular example. This broken bar shaped gorget was cut from a colorful fossiliferous marble sometime during the early Woodland period. If you look carefully you can see two perforations, or holes, through which the gorget was strung. One is easy to find, the second is barely visible along the break-line of the gorget.
