At the end of the Warring States period (late 16th century), Kunitsuna Utsunomiya, the local feudal lord, relocated his residence to this castle. It is believed that this move was made because Utsunomiya Castle, his previous stronghold, was deemed unsuitable for defense against the invading Hojo clan. When the Hojo were defeated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, Kunitsuna returned to Utsunomiya. However, in 1597 he was dispossessed of his domain by Hideyoshi, and this castle was subsequently abandoned. The castle is regarded as one of the largest mountain castles in the Kanto region. Numerous compounds, earthworks, and moats were constructed along each ridge, centering on the main compound at the summit. On the southern side, a long moat approximately 2km in length surrounded the foot of the mountain.
