At the end of The Warring States period (end of the 16th century), Kunitsuna Utsunomiya, the feudal lord of the time, moved to this castle. It is thought that this relocation was because Utsunomiya castle, the residence until then, was unsuitable for defense against the invasion of the hostile Hojo clan. When the Hojo clan was destroyed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1590, Kunitsuna returned to Utsunomiya. In 1597, he had his territory confiscated by Hideyoshi, and this castle was abandoned. This castle is built on the entire Mt. Tage, and is one of the largest mountain castles in the Kanto region. There were many Kuruwa (compounds), earthworks, and moats on each ridge, centering on the Honmaru (main compound) at the summit. Also on the south side, a long moat with 2km surrounded the mountain foot.
