The Tarleton family are buried in the north-east corner of the graveyard (OF025-017004-) in Killeigh, Co. Offaly, inside the ruins of Killeigh Friary (OF025-017001-). A large mausoleum was constructed in the 19th-century in the north-east corner of the Franciscan Friary, to house members of the Tarleton family who lived in the Abbey House which is located immediately to the north of the graveyard. The cast iron doorway of the mausoleum stands on the west side of the structure and bears the family name and crest above. The crest consists of a dragon’s head erased, collared and chained resting on a torse or twisted roll of fabric. The heraldic term erased refers to the jagged end of the head or neck which represents the forcible removal of the head. The memorial plaque on this mausoleum commemorates Elizabeth Constance Tarleton, who died 1862, aged 16 and other members of her family.
