Terracotta Baluster Vase, Duff House3D ModelNoAI
This is a terracotta oviform vase carved with women and cupids, set on a white marble turned base.
It a rare case of a chaste example of the work of Claude Michel, known as ‘Clodion’, whose work was notorious for the salacious quality of its essentially classical compositions.
It must have been one of the last things acquired by General Sir James Erskine on his Grand Tour of Italy in 1821-2.
His journey back home led him via Paris where he bought this vase for 150 francs or £6 for his art collection, which composed largely of 17th-century Dutch paintings and table-top bronzes of classical subjects. Erskine’s collection forms part of the Dunimarle Collection, now on display at Duff House.
