The Archaeological Park of Sarmisegetusa Ulpia Traiana is an important ancient site located in the municipality of Hateg (historical county of Hateg) in the Hunedoara region of central Romania. It’s situated in the historical province of Țara Hațegului, within Hunedoara County. This area is found at the base of the Retezat Mountains and borders Retezat National Park.
The Roman Amphitheater at Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa is one of the most imposing and well-preserved public buildings of the ancient capital of Roman Dacia. It was the heart of the colony’s social and entertainment life, hosting various public activities.
The amphitheater has an elliptical shape, typical for this type of Roman construction, with impressive dimensions of approximately 88 meters in length and 69 meters in width. It’s estimated to have had a capacity of about 5,000 spectators (a very large number for that period), which underscores its importance to the Roman community in Dacia.
