Color reconstruction by Glyptoteket

The portrait”The Beauty of Palmyra” was acquired in 1929 from an excavation in Palmyra, by Danish archaeologist Harald Ingholt. Her real name is unknown, but the beauty and wealth of detail in the face, jewellery and costume are striking.

Visible on her cheeks, hair, jewellery and clothes are traces of colours. There is no doubt that The Beauty of Palmyra was once painted.

The Portrait of The Beauty of Palmyra was used to seal her tomb. There was often an inscription on the tomb portrait saying who the deceased was, but the inscription on The Beauty’s tomb has been lost.
