The Cumberland Stone or The Duke of Cumberland’s Stone

This large glacial erratic gain notoriety as the location the Duke of Cumberland (the ‘Butcher Duke’) took breakfast on the morning of the Battle of Culloden, 16th April 1746, later using the stone to survey the battlefield. The top of the stone is carved ‘Position of the Duke of Cumberland during the Battle of Culloden’ and the side facing the road is carved ‘Cumberland Stone’. The stone is 5’ 3” high.
